Construction firms accounted for nearly one-fifth of insolvencies in England and Wales in January



Construction firms accounted for 16.6% of all insolvencies in England and Wales in January 2024, according to the Insolvency Service, with 295 registered construction businesses becoming insolvent.


In the year to January 2024, the total number of construction firms becoming insolvent was 4,383. 

This was an increase of 5.9% on the 4,139 insolvencies recorded in the year to January 2023, and a 36.2% increase on the 3,218 in 2019.

In Scotland, there were 19 construction company insolvencies in February 2024, accounting for 20.2% of all insolvencies.

This was four more than in January 2024, and two more than in February 2023.

The total for the 12-month period up to February 2024 was 203, which was a 0.5% decrease on the 202 insolvencies in the year to February 2023, and a 1.9% decrease on the 207 in 2019.
